Jim Karels joins Perimeter Solutions with extensive experience

Perimeter Solutions, a leading global manufacturer of high-quality fire retardant, announced today the appointment of Jim Karels as its new Agency Liaison.

Karels, with over 45 years of experience in wildland fire and forest management, is set to succeed Ron Raley, who retired in late 2023.

Karels’ career spans roles with the US Forest Service (USFS), the Florida Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters (NASF), where he served as the National Fire Director.

As Agency Liaison, Karels will represent Perimeter Solutions to fire management agencies worldwide.

He aims to leverage his extensive industry relationships to promote the company’s wildland firefighting products and services.

Shannon Horn, Business Director of North America Retardant and Services at Perimeter Solutions, expressed enthusiasm for Karels’ appointment: “We are extremely fortunate to have someone with Jim’s extensive background in wildland firefighting and forest management.

“He is uniquely positioned to build on the strong relationships we have with fire management agencies around the world.”

Karels’ career milestones and vision for his new role

Throughout his career, Karels has been involved in numerous significant initiatives and roles.

He chaired the steering committee for the Complex Incident Management Course in Florida, a position he held for a decade.

The incident management processes developed during his tenure are still in use today.

Karels also led the investigation into the 2013 Yarnell (Arizona) Fire, a catastrophic event that claimed the lives of 19 Hotshots.

More recently, he contributed to a policy group that collaborated with the USFS to enhance burn policies following the 2022 wildfire season.

Reflecting on his new role, Karels emphasizes his commitment to addressing the growing challenge of wildfires: “As National Fire Director, I supported firefighters on fires all over the country; however, as a Florida resident, I have witnessed the alarming increase in wildfires here and in the Eastern United States.

“This firsthand experience gives me a comprehensive national perspective that will help me to ensure that Perimeter Solutions continues to deliver safe, impactful solutions to wildfires nationwide.”
