Those who have completed a foundational course in wind turbines and electrical safety, or have at least six months of hands-on experience, are eligible for the program.
The certification ensures that technicians are proficient in key areas such as servicing, inspecting, and troubleshooting wind turbines.
The program aligns with the Wind Turbine Technician Exam Blueprint, which outlines necessary competencies for performing essential tasks in the field.
The NFPA WTT-I certification is a part of the organization’s broader mission to support a skilled global workforce.
As a core element of the NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem™, the certification is an effort to upskill technicians, thereby enhancing safety and reducing risks in the wind energy sector.

The global wind energy sector is expected to require over 574,000 technicians by 2027, according to the Global Wind Energy Council.
In the United States alone, an estimated 77,000 workers will need specialized training over the next few years.
