Wildfire resources shared by Red Cross of Utah

This May, in recognition of Wildfire Awareness Month, the American Red Cross has announced it is offering free wildfire prevention information and resources to help local residents stay safe.

Recognizing the growing risks alongside wildfire season approaching, Governor Spencer Cox recently signed an executive order aimed at bolstering the state’s wildfire preparedness.

The order emphasizes addressing Utah’s wildfire vulnerabilities and highlights the increasing risk of post-fire flooding and debris flows.

These efforts build on the success of the Fire Sense Campaign, which reduced human caused wildfires statewide by 75% in just four years.

The Red Cross of Utah has shared how it is committed to supporting these initiatives with vital education and resources to keep communities safe.

CEO, American Red Cross Utah/ Nevada Region, Heidi Ruster’s statement

Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/ Nevada Region said: “Our mission at the Red Cross is to lessen human suffering wherever we can.

“This includes not only responding to large-scale disasters but also empowering people with the knowledge to prepare for and prevent them.”

Resources for families and homeowners

The Red Cross provides wildfire safety materials for all ages, including the “Prepare with Pedro” series designed for kids.

Through engaging stories with Pedro the penguin, children learn essential safety tips like what an evacuation is, how to recognize fire warnings and calming techniques for stressful situations.

Homeowners are encouraged to inspect their properties for wildfire risks, such as overgrown grass, dead trees and dry plant material. Simple proactive measures can make homes safer and reduce the risk of wildfire damage.

Here are some additional wildfire safety tips recommended by the Red Cross and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

  • Create defensible space around your home using the NFPA’s zone concept.
  • Choose fire-resistant plants for landscaping (consult a local expert or find recommendations on the
  • Firewise website).
  • Clear space between trees and shrubs to prevent flames from spreading.
  • Prune tree branches 6-10 inches above the ground and remove dead wood.
  • Keep grass trimmed to under 4 inches at all times.
