East Meadow Fire Department uses virtual reality to train volunteer firefighters

East Meadow Fire Department has introduced a mixed reality firefighter training system designed to help volunteer crews prepare for live-fire conditions while reducing the risks associated with traditional burn training.

The department, based on Long Island, recently unveiled the FLAIM FTS system after receiving a $65,000 grant secured by Nassau County Legislator Tom McKevitt. East Meadow is the first fire department on Long Island to use the training device.

During a demonstration, Firefighter Joseph D’Alessandro of Engine Company 4 showed how the system works before McKevitt tested the equipment using virtual reality goggles to experience simulated fireground conditions.

The FLAIM FTS platform replicates core elements of firefighting, including the feel and handling of a high-pressure hose. A heat vest increases in temperature as a trainee moves closer to simulated flames, while audio and scenario elements respond in real time to the trainee’s actions and water flow.

Instructors can use an accompanying tablet to set learning objectives, monitor live performance data, and conduct post-training reviews. The system also records analytics and reporting data to support future training plans.

McKevitt said he was “truly impressed” with the technology and said the grant-funded investment would help firefighters better protect the community. “This investment in innovation ensures our firefighters are even better prepared to protect and serve our community,” he said.

John J. Priest, chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, said the department introduced FLAIM Trainer as part of its commitment to fiscal responsibility and firefighter safety. Chief of Department Michael Wood said advanced training supports firefighter safety, situational awareness, teamwork, confidence, and leadership among East Meadow’s volunteer firefighters.
