The Lotfi Zadeh Foundation has announced a plan to develop ultra-low-cost housing centers for victims of the recent wildfires in Los Angeles.
The fires have destroyed over 12,000 homes, leaving thousands of residents struggling to find accommodation in a market already experiencing a severe housing shortage.
The foundation’s initiative aims to address this need with housing units costing between $5,000 and $8,000 each.
The organization says these centers can be built within months, providing immediate relief to those affected.
Norman Zadeh, President of the Lotfi Zadeh Foundation, said: “We can build ultra-low-cost centers specifically for fire victims in months, which is exactly what Los Angeles desperately needs.”
The housing units will be more than just shelters.
According to the foundation, they will include medical care, food services, and educational programs to support residents in rebuilding their lives.
Each individual housed in the centers could be fully supported for approximately $10,000 per year, covering all amenities and services.
Los Angeles County was already experiencing a housing shortage before the wildfires, with an estimated deficit of 500,000 housing units.
More than half of tenants in the county spend over a third of their income on rent.
The fires have worsened the situation, increasing the demand for affordable housing.
The Lotfi Zadeh Foundation’s proposal seeks to provide a scalable, cost-effective response to the growing crisis.
Beyond basic accommodation, the foundation’s housing centers will include communal spaces such as sound studios, art facilities, and farming areas.
The goal is to create sustainable communities where residents can develop new skills and engage in productive activities.
Zadeh stated: “The idea is to take this crisis and turn it into an opportunity for sustainable community building.
“With $50 million in funding, we could construct 10,000 housing units with full amenities, potentially housing a significant portion of those displaced by the fires.”
