SimpliSafe has announced that its Richmond, Virginia, Monitoring Center has received UL certification for the Alarm Validation Scoring Standard (AVS-01).
According to SimpliSafe, AVS-01 provides a standardized method for classifying and reporting home burglary alarms between monitoring centers and public safety agencies.
The certification is intended to improve the accuracy and efficiency of emergency responses.
The standard was developed through a collaboration between The Monitoring Association (TMA), UL Solutions, public safety professionals, and industry stakeholders.
The AVS-01 standard introduces a classification system for burglary alarms, assigning a score between 0 and 4.
A score of 0 indicates no call for service, while a score of 4 represents a threat to life.
SimpliSafe states that this standardized scale allows monitoring centers to provide emergency dispatchers with consistent, actionable information.
The goal is to enhance first responders’ situational awareness and improve response efficiency.
SimpliSafe was involved in the development of AVS-01 and is among the first home security providers to adopt the standard in its monitoring centers.
Christian Cerda, CEO of SimpliSafe, said: “False and low-information home alarm signals have led to unnecessary noise within emergency response systems, exacerbating overwhelmed first responder resources and potentially leaving homeowners vulnerable during times of need.”
Cerda added that SimpliSafe has worked to reduce false alarms through technologies such as video verification and Intruder Intervention, which enable agents to visually verify threats when contacting authorities.
SimpliSafe’s adoption of AVS-01 aligns with its broader efforts to enhance security practices.
Christy Sehl, Head of Monitoring Operations at SimpliSafe, stated: “It’s been a privilege to work alongside fellow security industry leaders as SimpliSafe has risen to the challenge of being an early adopter for the AVS-01 Standard.”
Sehl emphasized that verified alarms play a key role in AVS-01, and SimpliSafe’s video verification technology is positioned to support this initiative.
