Tools the fire service can trust

Lori Oquendo, Account Executive/ Sales & Marketing Manager at Setcom, explains the importance of building a reliable lifeline of communication

Could you please introduce yourself and your role at Setcom?

My name is Lori Oquendo and I serve as Account Executive/ Sales & Marketing Manager at Setcom.

In this role, I manage our central territory, oversee our sales team, marketing efforts and brand-building for our rugged communication systems.

I enjoy working directly with our sales team to assist in understanding customers needs and help our customers find solutions that make their jobs safer and easier.

Setcom takes pride in closely collaborating with individuals in the field, listening to their feedback to promote development- how invaluable do you think this is to Setcom?

At Setcom, partnering with our customers is the way we work daily.

When firefighters tell us what’s going well and where the challenges are, it gives our team the realworld insight they need to keep building the strongest communication systems out there.

Lori Oquendo

That feedback drives how we design and improve our gear, making sure it holds up in the conditions crews actually face.

By listening closely and adapting as needs change, we’re able to deliver tools the fire service can trust every time.

In simplified terms, how do communication needs differ for each public safety professional, for example what distinguishes the needs of a firefighter or rescue personnel?

Communication in the fire service is unlike any other environment.

Crews operate in high noise, high stress conditions where clarity and speed can mean the difference between safety and chaos.

Key challenges firefighters face include:

  • Engines and pump panels producing noise levels of 100 dB
  • Coordination gaps between truck crews, pump operators and incident command
  • Safety risks from missed or distorted instructions near apparatus
  • Push-to-talk delays slowing important decisions

How our solutions can benefit different fire department needs:

Engine companies: Clear, handsfree communication between driver/operators and crews during pump operations. Also, in vehicle backing.

Ladder companies: Reliable coordination between turntable operators, aerial platform personnel and ground crews. Also, in vehicle backing.

Command vehicles: System 1600 supports up to six mobile radios, giving chiefs and command staff the flexibility to monitor and transmit across multiple tactical, dispatch and mutual aid channels.

EMS / Ambulance teams: Handsfree communication while delivering patient care and coordinating with hospitals. Also, in vehicle backing.

Brush trucks / Wildland crews: Seamless communication across wide areas, supporting hand crews, engines and air support.

ARFF operations: Often utilize Setcom’s wired 1300 system, featuring split audio that allows crews to separate and prioritize critical channels during highnoise, highspeed responses.

Rescue teams with drones: Integrated communication that keeps ground crews connected while coordinating aerial drone support for search and rapid response.

By addressing these distinct needs, our systems ensure that every firefighter and rescue personnel, from pump operator to incident command has a reliable lifeline of communication.

The impact is felt directly in the field. As one Battalion Chief in Alabama shared: “We’ve had the opportunity to put the LiberatorMAX headsets to use during several special events and emergency incidents and the feedback from our division has been very positive.

“The team has been especially impressed with the clarity of communication and how effectively the system filters out background noise in highactivity environments.”

This testimonial underscores why tailored solutions matter. Different missions within the fire service demand different communication strengths.

You offer a LiberatorMAX Fire headset for those in the fire service, but you also offer the LiberatorMAX Industrial Headset System – why is this system particularly beneficial in high-noise environments?

The LiberatorMAX Fire headset was built specifically for the realities of the fireground.

Simplicity, no pairing and affordable.

Firefighters face extreme noise, heavy gear and the need to coordinate instantly across crews and command and this system delivers fullduplex, handsfree communication that cuts through the chaos.

With extended range and multiradio integration options, it ensures clarity whether you’re at the pump panel, in a ladder truck or inside a command vehicle.

That reliability makes it a tool the fire service can trust when every second counts.

The LiberatorMAX Industrial Headset System is built for crews working in high-noise environments. In these settings, workers need to coordinate across multiple teams without delay.

LiberatorMAX delivers rugged, handsfree communication that keeps conversations clear even around heavy machinery or hazardous sites.

Lori Oquendo

That reliability makes it a critical tool for maintaining safety and efficiency in highrisk industries.

Alongside utilizing feedback, Setcom also completes rigorous testing of each product, why is testing an essential part of the process?

Feedback drives our designs and testing ensures those solutions are reliable.

Every system is fully tested as a complete unit before it leaves our facility, so crews know they’re getting gear they can trust. Testing is essential because crews can’t afford uncertainty in critical communications.

To reinforce that confidence, we back our products with a twoyear warranty and a full technical support team ready to assist whenever customers need them.

By putting these processes in place, we make sure that when firefighters depend on our systems, they perform exactly as expected.

Critical communications can be impacted for those in the fire service, how are your LiberatorMAX Fire headsets designed to prevent any interference from occurring?

Critical communications can’t afford to be compromised, especially on the fireground.

The LiberatorMAX Fire headsets are designed with no pairing required, so crews can connect instantly without setup delays.

They also provide 23 dB NRR hearing protection, cutting down dangerous background noise while keeping conversations clear.

That combination ensures firefighters stay connected to each other and to command, even in the loudest, most chaotic environments.

Looking to the next five years or even beyond, do you have any exciting plans/ aspirations? Maybe an exciting announcement to share!

The next few years bring more opportunities for Setcom. We can’t share all the details just yet, our team is actively developing new product features designed around customer feedback.

At the end of the day, our goal stays the same: build rugged communication systems firefighters can trust.

We’re committed not only to advancing headset technology but also to strengthening partnerships across fire service, industrial and public works communities.
