October 15, 2024

Toledo secures $3.2 million for custom Spartan fire trucks

As reported by Spartan Emergency Response, the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department has placed an order for four custom-built fire engines.

The trucks, expected to be delivered by 2026, were approved through a $3.2 million request from the Capital Improvement Fund in October 2023.

This is the first time Toledo has ordered fire apparatus from Spartan Emergency Response.

The fire trucks, tailored to the specific needs of the department, were designed in collaboration with Johnson’s Emergency Vehicle Solutions, the authorized Spartan dealer for Ohio.

Toledo’s fire department, which operates 18 active stations and seven support buildings, handles over 60,000 calls annually.

Chief Allison Armstrong of Toledo Fire & Rescue said: “Johnson’s Emergency Vehicle Solutions was able to help us source much-needed fire apparatus.

“We look forward to receiving and putting these pumpers into service to help protect the city and people of Toledo.”

Custom features to meet Toledo’s needs

The four pumpers ordered by Toledo will feature several custom elements designed to improve firefighting capabilities in the city.

The units will be built on Spartan MetroStar LFD cabs and include low hosebeds, a custom ladder, and a hard suction storage rack on the right side.

The trucks will also come equipped with a 500-gallon water tank and a 30-gallon foam cell, designed to work with an external eductor system for enhanced fire suppression capabilities.

Additionally, the trucks will be fitted with Hale QMax 1750 GPM pumps, enabling efficient firefighting operations in large urban areas like Toledo.

Tony Johnson, dealer principal at Johnson’s Emergency Vehicle Solutions, expressed optimism about the collaboration with the city, saying: “We’re delighted to introduce Spartan Emergency Response to the city of Toledo.

“We are optimistic that our partnership will evolve and grow as Toledo continues to.”

Toledo prepares for expanded fire capabilities

The decision to purchase the new trucks comes as part of the department’s broader efforts to modernize its fleet and enhance its capacity to respond to emergencies.

With nearly 600 firefighters on staff, the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department plays a critical role in maintaining public safety for the city’s residents.

The collaboration with Johnson’s Emergency Vehicle Solutions allowed the fire department to customize the apparatus within their financial constraints while meeting operational requirements.

The new trucks will strengthen the department’s fleet as they respond to a growing number of emergency calls across Toledo.

Delivery expected by 2026

The custom pumpers are scheduled for delivery by early 2026, and upon arrival, they will be immediately integrated into Toledo Fire & Rescue’s fleet.

The department’s proactive approach in securing these units through collaboration with Johnson’s Emergency Vehicle Solutions and Spartan Emergency Response will ensure they continue to serve the community effectively.

The units were sold by Jesse Sopko, Ohio Sales Manager for Johnson’s Emergency Vehicle Solutions, who played a key role in finalizing the purchase.
