EN 15004-1 update to align with NFPA 2001 actuator supervision

Earlier this year, TLX Fire & Security announced that its linear electric actuators for fire suppression systems meet the expected changes to EN 15004-1.

According to TLX Fire & Security, the updated European standard is anticipated to require both audible and visual alarms at the fire control panel if the actuator is removed from the valve connected to the fire suppression agent.

The manufacturer explained that the revision to EN 15004-1 would match the requirements already adopted by NFPA 2001, which has mandated this supervisory feature in the United States since 2016.

NFPA standards address actuator installation failures

TLX Fire & Security stated that NFPA introduced its actuator supervision requirement following incidents where technicians failed to correctly install actuators.

It reported that improper installation, either during system commissioning or maintenance, resulted in suppression systems failing to discharge as intended.

TLX Fire & Security noted that NFPA responded to these risks by making it mandatory for systems to alert users if actuators were not properly fitted.

TLX Fire & Security design integrates supervision into actuator body

The company said it developed actuators that integrate the supervisory feature directly into the actuator design.

TLX Fire & Security explained that this eliminates the need for additional monitoring components on the valve.

It stated that when the actuator is removed from the discharge or selector valve, audible and visual signals are triggered and will continue until the device is correctly reinstalled.

Actuators prepared for European compliance with EN 15004-1 revision

According to TLX Fire & Security, all of its actuators and valves for fire suppression systems are already equipped with this built-in supervision feature.

It stated that the company’s patented design already satisfies NFPA 2001 standards and will also meet the revised EN 15004-1 once it is adopted.

TLX Fire & Security added that the expected alignment between NFPA and EN standards allows its current actuator range to be compatible with both U.S. and European market requirements.

TLX Fire & Security actuators comply with updated EN 15004-1 standard: Summary

Earlier this year, TLX Fire & Security confirmed its actuators meet anticipated changes to EN 15004-1.

The company said the revision will introduce supervisory alarm requirements similar to NFPA 2001.

NFPA 2001 has required actuator supervision since 2016.

This followed reports of improper actuator installations that prevented fire suppression discharge.

TLX Fire & Security responded by designing actuators with integrated supervisory features.

These features trigger alarms if the actuator is removed from the valve.

The alarms stop once the actuator is properly reinstalled.

The system does not require external supervisory components.

All of TLX Fire & Security’s actuators now include this feature.

The company stated its products meet both NFPA and EN standards.
