Darryl Mendivil, CEO of SYTIS, outlines how its wildfire camera series delivers reliable early fire detection using thermal technology 

What makes the SYTIS wildfire camera series effective for early fire detection? 

The SYTIS Fire Detection System combines bi-spectral optical and thermal technology with AI and our 24/7 InfraSpec alert software.

This integrated system allows detection of fires through smoke, fog, rain and lightning conditions from miles away. 

Most traditional systems typically have limited optical visibility and cannot see effectively through smoke or fog, which reduces performance in changing weather conditions. 

However, the SYTIS system offers a real-world capability.

A system installed at a Southern California Edison substation detected a fire approximately 20 miles away.  

How does the camera detect fires in challenging conditions? 

The system uses radiometric thermal technology that can detect ignition sources. 

With a 512 × 480 resolution and 246,760 temperature measurement points, it delivers high detection accuracy with approximately +/- 2% accuracy per pixel. 

The camera performs continuous 360-degree patrols, monitoring for wildfire ignition 24/7.  

When an event is detected, custom alerts are instantly sent to the end user via email, allowing access from a computer, mobile phone or tablet for rapid response from any location. 

How do the AI elements differentiate between actual fire events and false alarms? 

AI capabilities are built directly into the system firmware and software.

Flame detection is triggered immediately upon ignition using fire spot detection, along with advanced analytics including human detection, vehicle detection, defined area alarms, center-area monitoring and smart motion detection. 

The system can also identify human activity that may be responsible for causing it. This helps reduce false alarms and improve response intelligence. 

End users can configure their own alarm parameters, including 360-degree pan and tilt, up to 12 patrol tours, 32 presets per hour, selectable colour palettes and adjustable streaming bit rate. 

Through InfraSpec, users receive instant alerts and can log in from anywhere for live viewing as soon as an event occurs. 

What types of environments are these cameras best suited for? 

The system is designed for deployment in a wide range of environments. Its IP66-rated housing supports reliable operation in harsh outdoor conditions, including high-topography installations such as mountain peaks.  

These deployments allow large wildland areas and nearby urban centers to be monitored for early-stage ignition. It’s also deployed on rapid response trailers and installed on wildfire and fire response trucks.  

Using our keyboard and joy-stick control system, operators can perform 360-degree searches to detect smoke, flame and fire sources, even in foggy conditions, while also detecting firefighters operating within response zones. 

How do you see the camera series evolving in the future? 

SYTIS continues to enhance the InfraSpec software with new features and performance improvements. 

We are also working with technology partners on climate prediction capabilities designed to identify high-risk regions and signal conditions that may indicate increased wildfire potential.
