The LACoFD and LA County Stentorians honor Black History Month

The County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) and Los Angeles County Stentorians have celebrated Black History Month this February.

Recognizing the exceptional achievements of African American and Black Department members.

The LACoFD highlights the crucial role our African American and Black colleagues have played in shaping the Department and serving the diverse communities of Los Angeles County.

Led by LACoFD Fire Fighter Paramedic Johnny Gray III, Stentorians President, this Association of African Americans in the fire service was founded in 1954.

Since then, the Stentorians has worked to help train, mentor and lead African American and minority firefighters in a successful career in the fire service, as well as shaping the minds and providing career pathway opportunities to community youth.

Honoring the trailblazers

The Stentorians stated: “Black History Month provides an opportunity to honor the trailblazers whose perseverance and leadership helped shape the County of Los Angeles Fire Department – from the first Black firefighters hired in the 1950s to those serving in leadership, specialized assignments and professional staff roles today.”

Founded in 1954 to address systemic barriers to entry, advancement and equitable treatment within the fire service, the Stentorians have continued to pave the way toward a more inclusive environment Department-wide.

Recognizing the importance of Black History Month

The LACoFD is proud to honor their history as part of Black History Month and year-round.

The LACoFD expresses its deep gratitude to all African American and Black team members who have and continue to dedicate their service to the Department and Los Angeles County residents.

Their courage, resilience and commitment to public safety have left an indelible mark on the Department’s history and continue to inspire future generations of LACoFD team members.

The LACoFD encourages all to reflect on African American/Black contributions and work together to honor the legacy of Black History Month, both within the LACoFD and beyond.
