Staten Island families learn about safety through coloring

Staten Island families recently celebrated ‘National Coloring Book Day’ in West Brighton, while learning about fire safety and emergency preparedness.

The NYC Administration for Children’s Services, the Fire Department of the City of New York and the Staten Island Community Partnership hosted an event to celebrate the day.

There, they distributed coloring books on summer and fire safety to children and provided resources for families, such as smoke alarm installation information and city resources.

NYC Administration for Children’s Services Commissioner Jess Dannhauser shared: “We want New York City families to know all the ways to keep their children safe and this event is part of our ongoing work to do just that.”

ACS frequently partners with city agencies like the FDNY, as well as local organizations and community members, with the goal of supporting families and keeping children safe.

The educational programming included the FDNY’s ‘Smoke House,’ which teaches participants how to safely escape a house filled with smoke.

Commissioner, FDNY, Robert S. Tucker’s statement

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said: “Fire safety starts with education. The earlier, the better.

“Events like this are a great way for the FDNY to connect with families and give children the tools they need to stay safe.

“The FDNY is committed to spreading critical safety messages to adults and children and we are proud to partner with ACS and the Staten Island Community Partnership to make sure these important lessons reach every household.”

The event was also attended by New York City’s child welfare agency New York Foundling CEO Melanie Hartzog and NYC Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa, who both stressed the importance of family education and summer safety.
