As reported by AP News, firefighting teams in Southern California have managed to contain 31% of the Mountain Fire in Ventura County, which has led to the evacuation of thousands and the destruction of at least 168 structures.
The fire, spanning 32 square miles, was driven by intense Santa Ana winds reaching up to 80 mph.
While containment has improved from 26% earlier on Sunday, the fire’s size and damage remain extensive, affecting both residential areas and farmland.
Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner addressed the community on Sunday, stating: “I am grateful for the number of lives that were saved and the fact that we have zero reported fatalities.”
Gardner noted the damage yet highlighted that firefighters saved thousands of homes and carried out numerous rescues: “I know we made mistakes, but we will learn from those mistakes,” he added.
The Mountain Fire erupted Wednesday morning, fueled by dry, warm, and gusty conditions that accelerated its growth.
With wind gusts peaking at 80 mph, embers from burning orchards traveled as far as 2.5 miles to ignite new areas near Camarillo.
In response, evacuation orders were issued across Ventura County, and emergency teams prepared for fast-moving flames and shifting weather conditions.
The National Weather Service has forecast another round of Santa Ana winds expected to arrive on Tuesday; however, the gusts are anticipated to be less severe than those experienced during the fire’s onset.
Meteorologist Ryan Walbrun remarked that the upcoming winds may still cause concern for some residents: “They’re not going to be nearly as strong as the winds that occurred when this fire started.”
With containment increasing, authorities have downgraded evacuation orders to warnings in several parts of Ventura County, allowing residents in less affected areas to return home.
Agriculture officials have begun evaluating the damage to the region’s extensive farmland, primarily avocado, citrus, and berry crops.
The Ventura County Star reported preliminary agricultural losses estimated at $2.4 million.
Firefighters, who completed 136 rescues as of Sunday, continue assessing structural damage throughout the area.
In addition to property destruction, agricultural losses present significant financial impacts to Ventura County’s economy.
In response to the extensive damage and ongoing threat, Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Ventura County.
This emergency status will assist in mobilizing additional resources for firefighting efforts and disaster response.
The Mountain Fire, which rapidly expanded from less than half a square mile to over 16 square miles within five hours, highlights the region’s susceptibility to fast-moving wildfires, particularly with dry seasonal conditions and strong wind events.
Although red flag warnings expired across much of the region on Thursday, the continued low humidity and intermittent wind gusts keep the fire risk elevated.
