SFPE to conduct Engineering Solutions Symposium for lithium-ion battery fire safety

March 11, 2024

Fire safety in lithium-ion batteries to be the focus of SFPE symposium

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) is set to host a three-day symposium focused on fire safety in lithium-ion batteries.

Scheduled for June 4-6, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona, the event titled ‘SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium for Progress with Li-Ion Battery Fire Safety: Engineering Solutions to Mobility and Storage Hazards’ is expected to attract fire protection engineering professionals globally.

Highlights of the symposium

The symposium promises to deliver in-depth discussions on current fire safety issues related to lithium-ion batteries, an increasingly popular energy storage solution.

The event is aligned with the SFPE Foundation’s Grand Challenges Initiative (GCI), identifying fire safety in lithium-ion batteries as a critical research and education area for the next decade.

The SFPE initiative dovetails with the key points raised in the ‘Grand Challenges in Energy & Infrastructure’ white paper, emphasizing the importance of this research.

Agenda and sessions

The SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium will span three days, featuring a range of workshops and discussions led by experts in the field.

The first day includes a workshop on thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, focusing on causes, detection, and mitigation.

Additionally, the workshop will provide overviews of regulations and standards for Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Electric Vehicles (EVs), and micro-mobility.

The following two days will concentrate on design considerations and strategies to mitigate hazards associated with the bulk storage of lithium-ion batteries and deployed products like electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Industry leaders and experts to gather

A range of experts, including fire safety engineers, researchers, and industry leaders, will attend the symposium.

Notable committee members such as Adam Barowy (Chair), Sean DeCrane, Ofodike Ezekoye, PhD, PE, and several others will facilitate sessions throughout the event.

Registration and sponsorship details

Early-bird registration discounts are available until May 1, 2024.

The event is supported by Hiller, Tesla, Stif Vigilx Energy, and SSI Fire Solutions, with limited sponsorship and exhibit opportunities still available.

More information and registration details can be found at www.sfpe.org/liionsymposium.
