SFPE Foundation: Recognition of fire safety contributions

As reported by the SFPE Foundation, the organization has announced the 20 recipients of its 2024 awards.

The awards highlight notable achievements in the field of fire safety, research, and innovation.

Margaret McNamee, Ph.D., from Lund University in Sweden, received the Arthur B. Guise Medal for her over 30 years of contributions to fire research, innovation, standardization, and education.

She will deliver the Guise Keynote Address at the 2024 SFPE Annual Conference & Expo in Louisville, KY, focusing on sustainable and fire-resilient buildings.

Brian Y. Lattimer, Ph.D., Xinyan Huang, Ph.D., and several other researchers received the Jack Bono Award for Engineering Communication for their article on unmanned aerial systems in outdoor firefighting, published in the Fire Technology journal.

Student achievements and future impact

Bronwyn Forrest, a PhD student at the University of Waterloo, Canada, was awarded the Dr. Guylène Proulx, OC Scholarship for her research on human behavior in residential fire situations.

The scholarship also recognizes the support of her advisor, Dr. E. J. Weckman.

Samuel Lovett from Carleton University and Siyan Wang from the University of California, Berkeley, received Student Scholar Awards.

Lovett was honored for developing new firefighter safety technologies, while Wang’s research focused on emissions from wildland fuel combustion.

Ting Xia, a PhD student at the University of Science and Technology of China, received the Frederick W. Mowrer Global Scholar Award.

Her work on fire resilience in Chinese informal settlements and her leadership contributions to the SFPE Hefei Student Chapter were highlighted.

Annual conference and future nominations

The awards will be presented by Manuel R. Silver, Jr., Chair of the SFPE Foundation Awards Committee, Peter Senez, Chair of the SFPE Foundation Board of Governors, and Maria B.

Marks, Vice Chair of the SFPE Foundation Board of Governors, at the SFPE Annual Conference & Expo in Louisville, KY, on October 6-8, 2024.

Nominations for the 2025 awards will be sought in early 2025.
