A state legislative session in North Dakota with Senate Bill 2340 could create a management study to evaluate changing state fire service operational and response needs.
North Dakota State Fire Marshall Doug Nelson said wildland-urban interface fires occur where developed land meets undeveloped land. He says these fires have burned through California, Texas, Hawaii and North Dakota, most recently threatening towns like Mandaree and Ray.
Nelson added: “With that emerging threat and the changing conditions, we’re seeing of bigger, stronger, faster fires that are occurring more often.
“We wanted to make sure that Senate Bill 2340 gives us the opportunity to evaluate that and make sure our fire service throughout the state is prepared for what’s coming down the road.”
The Fire Marshal’s office also released its preliminary fire statistics for 2024, showing some promise when it comes to response times.
There was a slight decrease when it came to the number of fires, down about 200 from the year before. But there was a big drop in the amount of damage those fires did.
Nelson attributes that to the North Dakota Firefighters Association offering more training services to more students over the last two years.
