Memorial ceremony to honor 55 fallen Seattle firefighters

The Seattle Fire Department will host the annual Seattle Fallen Firefighter Memorial on Friday, October 4, 2024, in Occidental Park.

The ceremony, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., will honor the 55 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1891.

According to the Seattle Fire Department, the event will feature traditional elements such as a color presentation by the Walter Kilgore Memorial Honor Guard and a performance by the Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums band.

City leaders, union leaders, and Seattle Fire Chief Harold D. Scoggins will deliver remarks.

The memorial serves as a moment for both the community and the fire department to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served to protect the city of Seattle.

Fire apparatus tribute to take place later in the evening

Later in the evening, from 8:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., Seattle Fire Department will conduct an additional tribute.

Fire stations across the city will pull their apparatus outside and flash their red lights continuously during that time.

While most stations will participate, it is noted that stations responding to emergency calls may not be able to take part.

This tribute offers the public another opportunity to engage with the department and show their support for the firefighters who have lost their lives while serving Seattle.

Community invited to participate in the memorial

The Seattle Fire Department has extended an invitation to community members to visit their local fire stations during the evening memorial event.

This gesture allows the public to directly support firefighters and observe the remembrance of fallen heroes.

In addition, the department encourages residents to change their exterior lights to red in honor of the event.

This visual act of solidarity can be carried out throughout the evening as a personal way to remember the firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

Media coordination for the event

The Seattle Fire Department requests that members of the media RSVP in advance if they plan to attend the memorial or the evening tribute.

Interested parties can send an email to the department’s public information officer at sfdpio@seattle.gov.

Media outlets are also encouraged to contact the department for recommendations on which fire stations to visit for the best opportunities to capture the evening’s events.

The department can suggest locations where multiple fire apparatus are housed, ensuring better coverage of the tribute.
