The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) has officially opened its application window for prospective firefighter/EMT candidates.
As reported by the Seattle Fire Department, the application period runs from October 4 to November 29, 2024.
Mayor Bruce Harrell, Fire Chief Harold Scoggins, and Seattle Fire Fighters Union Local 27 President Kenny Stuart announced that up to 80 new recruits will be hired in the coming year, thanks to the proposed city budget.
Mayor Harrell stated: “Joining the fire department is an incredibly rewarding career and I encourage everyone to apply.” Applications are open to individuals 18 and older with a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license.
EMT certification is not required to apply but will be necessary upon hire.
Applicants accepted into the SFD will enter a competitive career with a starting salary of $94,848.
Additional benefits include state retirement plans, step increases, and promotion opportunities.
Firefighters work 24-hour shifts, approximately eight days per month, responding to medical emergencies, fires, and rescue operations.
Chief Scoggins said: “If you share our values, like to work hard, enjoy being part of a team and most importantly, have a heart for service, we want you to apply.” The application process does not require previous EMT certification, but candidates must obtain one before employment.
The SFD provides guidance for certification.
Recruits accepted into the program will undergo a rigorous 16-week training course at the City’s Joint Training Facility, followed by a nine-month probationary period.
The training is both physically and mentally demanding, requiring participants to handle controlled fire situations and perform emergency services.
Local 27 President Kenny Stuart said: “Being a firefighter is a noble and rewarding profession that is highly skilled, team-oriented, time-critical, and physically demanding.
“This career requires a significant commitment to serve others at all costs.”
The SFD offers multiple pathways for advancement beyond the entry-level firefighter/EMT roles.
Career progression includes promotions to positions such as lieutenant, captain, and battalion chief.
Other specialized roles include paramedics, dispatchers, and fireboat pilots, among others.
SFD also operates specialized teams like Rescue One, the Energy Response Team, and the Hazardous Materials Team.
With the application window closing on November 29, those interested should apply online through the Seattle Fire Department’s recruitment portal.
