The Aspen Fire Protection District has expanded its wildfire detection capabilities with a new satellite-based system from OroraTech, now operational across the district and the extended Lincoln Creek Valley.
The deployment, delivered in partnership with the Aspen Wildfire Foundation, is designed to help firefighters identify possible wildfire starts and monitor fire activity in areas that have historically been difficult to observe.
The expansion was funded by the Aspen Wildfire Foundation with support from retired paramedic firefighter George Newell. Working with the Independence Pass Foundation, Newell helped address a wildfire monitoring gap across Lincoln Creek Valley and nearby National Forest lands.
OroraTech uses a constellation of thermal imaging satellites to detect heat anomalies across large landscapes, providing near real-time wildfire intelligence to emergency responders. The system can help flag emerging fires in remote or difficult-to-access terrain, including areas where ground-based cameras may have limited visibility.
The satellite system will work alongside the Aspen Fire Protection District’s existing Pano AI camera network, which provides continuous visual monitoring in other parts of the district. Together, the technologies are intended to create a more comprehensive early warning system and give firefighters additional time to contain fires before they grow.
Founded in Germany in 2018, OroraTech specializes in space-based thermal intelligence. Since launching its first satellite in 2022, the company has developed an operational satellite constellation dedicated to wildfire management. Its network includes more than 40 satellites, including 19 owned and operated by OroraTech, and supports wildfire monitoring in 22 countries.
Unlike traditional optical satellites, OroraTech’s thermal sensors can detect fires during the day and at night, including in rugged terrain and other blind spots where conventional monitoring systems may be limited.

Expanded satellite monitoring across our entire fire district and into adjoining landscapes helps us detect fires quickly, even in areas beyond the reach of our AI camera network. This strengthens our ability to protect residents, visitors, critical infrastructure, and our surrounding public lands by enabling faster, more effective response. The Lincoln Creek Valley is considered one of the region’s more challenging areas for wildfire detection because of rugged topography, dense forest canopy, and limited visibility from traditional monitoring methods. Extending satellite coverage into the valley gives firefighters another layer of intelligence to identify potential starts before they become large, destructive incidents.
“Lincoln Creek is hugely popular in the summer for camping, hiking, and biking. With only a one-way, very rough road out, early fire detection will be key to ensuring the safety of recreators,” said Karin Teague, executive director of the Independence Pass Foundation.

It’s an investment not only in technology, but in the long-term resilience of our entire community.”
Newell said protecting the forests surrounding Aspen requires investing in new solutions before disasters occur.
“Wildfire doesn’t recognize jurisdictional boundaries,” Newell said. “The Lincoln Creek Valley is a very important landscape for our community, and I’m proud to support technology that helps firefighters detect fires earlier and respond more effectively. Preventing catastrophic wildfire takes collaboration, innovation, and a willingness to invest in the future.”
The OroraTech system adds to the Aspen Fire Protection District’s wider wildfire detection and response efforts. Alongside the district’s Pano AI camera network, community mitigation work, public education, and regional partnerships, the satellite coverage is intended to strengthen wildfire resilience throughout the Roaring Fork Valley.
