The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) has announced that Assistant Chief Doug Wegren will take on the role of Fire Chief effective May 16, as reported by the Saskatoon Fire Department.
Wegren will replace Morgan Hackl, who retired in March after a 36-year tenure with SFD.
Jeff Jorgenson, City Manager, praised Wegren’s leadership: “Doug is a strong and collaborative leader who has built close ties with the Saskatoon community.”
Wegren’s career at SFD spans 25 years, during which he has taken on increasing levels of responsibility and built strong relationships with colleagues and community partners.
Wegren attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education.
He furthered his education by obtaining a Fire Service Administration certificate and a Fire Service Leadership certificate from Dalhousie University.
Wegren began his career with SFD in 1999 as a Firefighter and EMT.
He has served in various roles, including F.I.R.E. Cadet Instructor, Fire Service Instructor, Restorative Action Lead, Assistant Chief of Logistics, and Acting Fire Chief.
He also played an active role in the City’s emergency COVID response, participating in the City of Saskatoon’s Emergency Command Centre and Emergency Management Operations planning section.
Wegren expressed his gratitude and vision for the future: “I am humbled by the opportunity to lead such an esteemed fire service in the community that I call home.”
He emphasized his commitment to collaboration: “As the new Fire Chief, I am committed to working collaboratively with our partners and all orders of government to meet the evolving needs of our community.”
Wegren highlighted the dedication of the SFD team: “It is an honor to work with the exceptional individuals at SFD, and I am excited to lead a dedicated team in providing emergency response to the residents of Saskatoon and the surrounding area.”
The transition to new leadership comes at a time when SFD continues to address various community needs.
Wegren’s extensive experience and dedication to the fire service are expected to guide the department in its ongoing efforts to enhance safety and emergency response capabilities.
Wegren’s career progression and active involvement in the community underscore his preparedness for the role of Fire Chief.
His leadership is anticipated to bring continuity and growth to SFD’s operations and community engagement.
