San José Fire Department has welcomed a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) apparatus into service at Fire Station 20, strengthening emergency response capability at San José Mineta International Airport.
The new vehicle, Engine 20 Delta, was formally introduced on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, during a traditional push-in ceremony attended by representatives from the fire department, airport, city leadership, and local dignitaries.
Designed for the specialist demands of aircraft emergencies, Engine 20 Delta is equipped with a high-reach turret nozzle and a thermal-imaging camera to support firefighters operating in darkness, severe weather, and smoke-filled conditions. The apparatus carries more than 3,100 gallons of water, along with hundreds of pounds of firefighting agents intended for rapid attack on aviation-related incidents.
Fire Station 20 currently operates three frontline ARFF vehicles, with a fourth unit available as a reserve when one of the primary apparatus is undergoing maintenance. The station also houses a rescue medic unit that responds to medical emergencies in the surrounding community.
According to the City of San José, Engine 20 Delta is the first SJFD ARFF vehicle to be fitted with modernized emissions-reduction equipment, making it a safer and more environmentally responsible addition to the department’s airport emergency response fleet.
The investment is intended to enhance protection for passengers, airport personnel, aircraft operations, and the wider San José community.
