The District of Saanich has announced that they have selected a Coast Salish artist to create a public art installation for the redeveloped Fire Station No.2.
Luke Marston (Ts’uts’umutlhw), a member of the Stz’uminus (Chemainus) First Nation, comes from a family of distinguished carvers and was mentored by legendary Haida artist Robert Davidson, the District of Saanich said in an announcement.
His work has been featured prominently across Canada, including commissions for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Canadian government and Vancouver International Airport.
One of his most notable sculptures, entitled Shore to Shore, is located in Stanley Park in Vancouver.
Marston’s artwork will serve as a landmark for the Royal Oak neighbourhood, integrating traditional and contemporary Coast Salish elements to complement the fire hall’s design.
Luke Martson said: “I’m grateful to have been the artist chosen to create a public installation for the District of Saanich Fire Department.
“I look forward to creating a strong symbol of strength and protection in the Coast Salish art form.”
Saanich Fire Chief Michael Kaye said it was difficult to choose just one submission, but praised Martson’s proposal which was ultimately selected as the winner.
Kaye shared: “We are very excited to work with Luke — his proposal encompasses the essence of the project and the history of the community.
“It will be an enduring piece of art for the entire community to enjoy.”
The sculpture will be created over the next 18 months, with an official unveiling planned alongside the opening of the new fire station in fall 2026.
