August 6, 2024

Oregon State Fire Marshal receives new firefighting vehicles

Rosenbauer America has begun delivery on a significant contract with the Oregon State Fire Marshal.

The contract includes 27 Type 3 Pumpers and 30 Water Tenders.

The first 12 Type 3 units and 15 Water Tenders have already been deployed across Oregon.

The contract was facilitated by General Fire Apparatus, Rosenbauer America’s authorized dealer.

Ernie Young, Regional Sales Manager for Rosenbauer America, stated: “So many communities are now being protected with the latest firefighting technology thanks to the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Engine Program.”

This program is designed to help local fire departments modernize their fleets and enhance their ability to respond to statewide fire incidents, including wildfires.

Detailed specifications of the new fire trucks

The Rosenbauer America Type 3 Pumper carries 500 gallons of water and 20 gallons of foam concentrate.

It features an Extreme Duty Body made from 12-gauge galvanneal steel, providing 110 cubic feet of compartment space and a 1000 GPM pump.

The Water Tender has a side mount “Maverick Aluminum Body” configuration, with a 2000-gallon water tank, a 2100-gallon folding tank, and a 750 GPM pump.

Both types of vehicles are manufactured at Rosenbauer’s facility in Lyons, South Dakota.

Brenden Feist, owner of General Fire Apparatus, commented on the importance of the program: “If a fire starts in a privately owned area, local and state resources are called to service the area.

“That is why this program bolsters all communities in the state of Oregon.”

He added that these trucks are specially designed for wildland-urban interface scenarios.

Funding and deployment timeline of the Engine Program

The Engine Program was funded through Senate Bill 762, Oregon’s wildfire omnibus bill in 2021.

The Oregon Department of State Fire Marshal began accepting applications for new fire trucks in July 2022.

The scoring committee reviewed applications in January 2023, and communities were informed of their awards in April 2023.

The first trucks were delivered in January 2024, with all remaining vehicles expected to be delivered by the end of 2024.

Goals and impact of the Engine Program

The Oregon Fire Service Engine Program aims to increase local capacity and improve regional mutual aid response for Oregon Conflagrations.

With Oregon’s wildfire seasons becoming longer and more complex, this program addresses the issue at the local level, aiming to keep fires small and away from communities.

The new fire trucks will enhance the ability of local fire departments to respond effectively to wildfire threats.
