Rio Fire Department opens two detachments of the corporation

The Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) opened two new detachments in the North of Rio de Janeiro on Monday 16 June.

The units, located in Farol de São Tomé, a district of Campos dos Goytacazes and in the municipality of São Francisco de Itabapoana, are intended to meet a long-standing demand from the population.

With the new unit, the expectation is to reduce the response time to incidents in Baixada Campista and adjacent areas by around one hour, speeding up services on the seafront in the Farol de São Tomé district and in locations such as Xexé, Maria da Rosa, Barra do Açu, São Martinho, Furadinho, Canal das Flexas and Barra do Furado.

Features of the unit

The Farol unit is equipped with a hybrid firefighting and rescue vehicle (ABS) and also has a staff of five soldiers on duty 24 hours a day.

The detachment also comes to support the Maritime Rescue service that operates along the beachfront, especially during the summer, when the operation is reinforced with up to eight lifeguards and boat operators for water rescue.

For this purpose, a jet ski, a motor boat, a quad bike and a pickup truck will be available. The new unit will also serve as a point of service to the population for issues such as legalization of businesses, events and information on the fire rate.

The inauguration of these detachments represents a significant advance in our response capacity in the North of Rio de Janeiro.

General Commander, CBMERJ, Colonel Tarcisco Salles’ statement

The Secretary of State for Civil Defense and General Commander of CBMERJ, Colonel Tarcisco Salles said: “We are meeting a long-standing demand from the population, reducing the time it takes to arrive at incidents and expanding the presence of the Fire Department in strategic regions.”

Location and equipment

Located approximately 50 kilometers from the Campos dos Goytacazes barracks (5th GBM), the detachment in São Francisco de Itabapoana was also equipped with a hybrid firefighting and rescue vehicle (ABS) and has an aluminum boat for operating in areas that are difficult to access by river.

As in the Farol de São Tomé unit, the force consists of five soldiers per shift.

The area of operation includes the entire municipality of São Francisco de Itabapoana, from the border with Espírito Santo, in the town of Barra do Itabapoana, to the border with Campos dos Goytacazes, passing through regions such as Deserto Feliz, Santa Luzia, Usina Cana Brava, Campo Novo and Gargaú.

The unit should also contribute to increasing the collection of fire taxes, which is essential for the maintenance and expansion of the operational structure of the Fire Department.
