The Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) has reported the launch of two new fire service detachments in northern Rio de Janeiro.
According to CBMERJ, the new units are located in the district of Farol de São Tomé and in the municipality of São Francisco de Itabapoana.
The department said the new facilities were developed in response to community requests and are expected to improve response times in several surrounding regions.
CBMERJ explained that the detachment in Farol is designed to support both land and maritime emergencies.
It added that these units are expected to reduce incident response times by around one hour in previously underserved areas.
CBMERJ stated that the Farol de São Tomé unit is staffed by five firefighters on duty 24 hours a day.
It reported that the detachment is equipped with a hybrid fire-fighting and rescue vehicle (ABS).
The fire department added that the station will also support the Maritime Rescue service that operates along the local beachfront.
According to CBMERJ, seasonal reinforcements during the summer months include up to eight lifeguards and boat operators.
To assist with water-based operations, the department explained that the unit is equipped with a jet ski, motor boat, quad bike, and pickup truck.
The site will also serve the local public for activities such as business legalization, event approvals, and information on fire-related levies.
The Secretary of State for Civil Defense and General Commander of CBMERJ, Colonel Tarciso Salles, said: “The inauguration of these detachments represents a significant advance in our response capacity in the North of Rio de Janeiro.
“We are meeting a long-standing demand from the population, reducing the time it takes to arrive at incidents and expanding the presence of the Fire Department in strategic regions.”
CBMERJ reported that the São Francisco de Itabapoana unit is located approximately 50 kilometers from the existing 5th GBM barracks in Campos dos Goytacazes.
The fire department stated that it is also staffed by five personnel per shift.
CBMERJ explained that this unit has been supplied with a hybrid fire and rescue vehicle and an aluminum boat for river operations in hard-to-reach locations.
It noted that the coverage area includes the entire municipality of São Francisco de Itabapoana.
This includes locations from the Espírito Santo border in Barra do Itabapoana to the edge of Campos dos Goytacazes, including Deserto Feliz, Santa Luzia, Usina Cana Brava, Campo Novo, and Gargaú.
CBMERJ stated that, in addition to expanding emergency services, the new unit in São Francisco de Itabapoana is expected to support the collection of fire taxes.
It added that these funds are used to sustain and expand the department’s operational capacity.
The organization said that improvements in coverage help secure ongoing maintenance and equipment provision for regional operations.
According to CBMERJ, public access to legal and administrative services offered at these sites also supports long-term development planning.
