As reported by the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ), a series of activities were held on July 25 to commemorate World Drowning Prevention Day.
This event, established by the United Nations, aims to reduce aquatic accidents and fatalities globally.
One of the key highlights was the illumination of the Christ the Redeemer monument in blue from 6:30 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m., organized in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer.
In addition to this symbolic gesture, CBMERJ conducted an operational simulation at Copacabana beach.
This exercise involved more than 40 military personnel, utilizing inflatable boats, speedboats, jet skis, divers, lifeguards, and an aircraft.
During the simulation, four distinct rescues were executed to showcase the department’s proficiency in handling maritime emergencies.
These exercises were designed to enhance the firefighters’ rescue and life-saving techniques, ensuring they are well-prepared for real-life situations.
The simulation involved both watercraft and aircraft, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to aquatic rescue operations.
The CBMERJ also launched a social media campaign on its official channels to further promote awareness and preventive measures against drowning.
Colonel Leandro Monteiro, the State Secretary of Civil Defense and General Commander of CBMERJ, highlighted the department’s dual focus on prevention and rescue.
He stated: “The Rio de Janeiro State Fire Department works on two fronts: prevention and rescue.
“This year, for example, our lifeguards have already carried out more than 1 million actions to raise awareness among the population about the risks of swimming in the sea.
“In addition, more than 15,000 maritime rescues have been recorded throughout the state.
“These are lives saved directly or indirectly by the corporation.”
Monteiro’s remarks underscore the continuous efforts by CBMERJ to safeguard the public through both proactive education and reactive emergency response.
World Drowning Prevention Day provided an opportunity for CBMERJ to emphasize the importance of safety in aquatic environments.
The department’s activities on this day were aimed at not only showcasing their operational capabilities but also reinforcing the message of prevention.
Public engagement through social media campaigns played a significant role in spreading this message to a wider audience.
