Proactive safety in waste facilities: Ryan Fogelman highlights the need for early detection systems

Fires in waste and recycling centres are an escalating issue that demands immediate attention and effective solutions.

Since joining Fire Rover in 2015, I have dedicated my efforts to addressing this problem by introducing early detection systems combined with advanced suppression methods for high hazard occupancies.

My background in law and business has equipped me with the analytical skills necessary to understand the complexities of fire incidents in these facilities.

Initially, there was a lack of comprehensive data on the frequency and causes of fires in the industry.

To fill this gap, I began compiling reports on fire incidents across the United States and Canada.

These reports have become essential resources for stakeholders, insurers, operators and government entities using patterns and helping keep an eye on the progress of education and investments in innovation.

Our approach at Fire Rover involves using a combination of thermal, optical, and analytical tools to not only detect fires, but to have a highly trained Fire Rover agent respond in real time, by contacting the professionals, working with the customer and targeting application of water to the fire and/or collateral assets.

We are on pace to successfully respond to a fire incident at one of our customer sites, every single day in 2024 and on average we use less than 250 gallons of suppressant per incident.

Working closely with professional responders is a key aspect of our strategy.

Our system acts as a virtual firefighter, providing real-time data and targeted suppression that support on-site teams.

This partnership enhances overall firefighting efforts, allowing for more precise and efficient management of incidents.

Influencers Edition 2025 In the year ahead, I anticipate greater acceptance and implementation of full solutions within the industry.

Insurance companies and regulatory bodies continue to recognize both the benefits of our system, especially in terms of reducing property damage and environmental harm.

We mitigate the risk of a major or catastrophic event for both the insurer and the insured leading to lower premiums and more faith in the investments made in the operation.

Using our technology to expand our solution to other occupancies has been huge push for us in 2024.

We added our OnWatch mobile detection trailers to our newest project, the Hot Work Robot which replaces the traditional “fire watch security” resources required to do any cutting and grinding operations.

The Hot Work Robot also doubles as a mobile unit that can protect small piles, temporary hazard (batteries, chemicals, explosives) and more.

We also launched our “water tower” replacement solution in 2024 which allows our customers to install poles from which we can strategically target their outdoor operations with water during a yard or material storage fire.

This solution keeps all employees and fire fighters from having to climb steep stairs or ladders to fight the fires and smoke from the fire down below.

It’s important to communicate that a different approach to fire safety is available—one that emphasizes early detection and minimal damage versus the prevailing view that more water is better.

Traditional reliance on large amounts of water is not only outdated but also poses risks to people, property and the environment.

By adopting advanced technologies, we can protect valuable assets and enhance safety outcomes while protecting the public and our environment from fire water.
