Pierce Volterra Electric Fire Truck: A new era for Mississauga fire services

November 30, 2023

A landmark deal for sustainable fire services

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, has announced a significant 5-year supply contract with Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES), brokered by the Canada-based dealer Commercial Emergency Equipment Co.

This deal marks a major step forward in sustainable fire services, with the contract’s highlight being the inclusion of the Pierce Volterra electric fire truck.

This vehicle is slated for MFES’s new net-zero fire station.

Innovative fleet expansion

The initial order under this contract includes nine apparatus, led by the cutting-edge Pierce Volterra electric pumper.

This addition is particularly notable for its role in Station 125, Mississauga’s first net-zero energy fire hall.

Station 125, currently under construction and set to open next summer, represents a commitment to environmental stewardship, featuring sustainable materials and renewable energy sources, including 238 solar panels.

The station’s design and the electric apparatus are aligned with the City of Mississauga’s Climate Change Action Plan.

Strengthening community safety and environmental responsibility

MFES, a full-time career department handling around 30,000 emergency calls annually with a team of nearly 800 professionals, will significantly bolster its operational readiness with these new additions.

The department, which already has a fleet of over 31 front-line apparatus, including 24 from Pierce, is expanding to serve nearly 700,000 residents across 111 square miles.

This growth reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing community safety and environmental sustainability.

A trusted partnership

The collaboration between Mississauga and Pierce Manufacturing, facilitated by Commercial Emergency Equipment Co., underscores a deep-seated trust and a shared vision for advanced and sustainable emergency response solutions.

The five-year contract encompasses a broad range of Pierce apparatus, offering MFES a variety of choices to meet their diverse needs.

This includes aerials, rescues, pumpers, squads, quints, HAZMATs, and tankers, providing comprehensive support for the city’s first responders.

Pierce: Supporting community and environmental goals

Mississauga’s Chief Rizzi emphasized the importance of this partnership in supporting both the community’s first responders and the city’s environmental objectives.

The new apparatus will not only enhance MFES’s capabilities but also contribute to the city’s ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This aligns with the broader Climate Change Action Plan, aiming for a 40 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050.

FSJA Comment

The recent announcement of the Pierce Volterra electric fire truck being included in the 5-year supply contract between Pierce Manufacturing Inc. and Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) signifies a noteworthy shift in the landscape of fire and emergency services.

This partnership not only showcases the advancement in fire service technology but also highlights a growing consciousness towards sustainability and environmental responsibility within the sector.

What stands out in this collaboration is the emphasis on aligning the operational needs of MFES with the broader environmental goals of the City of Mississauga.

The integration of the Pierce Volterra electric fire truck into MFES’s fleet, especially for the pioneering net-zero energy Station 125, exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to addressing climate change concerns while ensuring robust emergency response capabilities.

This development is a clear indicator of the evolving priorities in fire and emergency services, where the impact on the environment is becoming a critical factor in decision-making processes.

It reflects a broader trend towards greener, more sustainable technologies in public services, aligning operational needs with environmental stewardship.

As such, this partnership between MFES, Pierce Manufacturing, and Commercial Emergency Equipment Co. could serve as a model for other fire departments and municipalities, encouraging a shift towards more sustainable and environmentally conscious practices in emergency services across North America.
