Perimeter secures FM approval for Newtonian fluorine-free foam

Perimeter Solutions, a global manufacturer of high-quality fire retardant and firefighting foam concentrates, has secured FM 5130 approval for SOLBERG EVOLUTION 3% Synthetic Fluorine-Free Foam (SFFF), a Newtonian formulation designed for aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) and sprinkler applications.

This milestone establishes SOLBERG EVOLUTION 3% SFFF as the first fluorine-free foam on the Department of Defense’s Qualified Products List to also hold FM approval for use in fixed sprinkler systems.

This approval helps simplify the transition to fluorine-free technology for aircraft hangars, fuel storage facilities and other fixed fire protection systems.

By combining Newtonian (water-like) viscosity with FM approval, SOLBERG EVOLUTION delivers high-performance fire suppression while remaining compatible with standard sprinkler hardware.

Manager- Business Development and Southern Region Sales Manager, Perimeter Solutions, Zachary Brackin’s statement

Zachary Brackin, Manager- Business Development and Southern Region Sales Manager at Perimeter Solutions explained: “Aviation fire protection is evolving, and so is the chemistry behind it.

“This advanced formulation delivers effective fire suppression that meets the strict performance and compliance standards set by FM, UL, ICAO, FAA and the US Department of Defense, helping customers transition to fluorine-free foam that is compatible with their existing fire protection infrastructure.”

Designed for fast knockdown and extinguishment of hydrocarbon fuels, including gasoline and kerosene-based fuels such as Jet A and Jet A-1, SOLBERG EVOLUTION 3% SFFF has demonstrated effective performance.

This has been through both aspirated and non-aspirated standard sprinkler heads to extinguish and secure Class B hydrocarbon fuel fires.

Key features include:

  • Newtonian (water-like) viscosity: True water-like flow characteristics simplify system engineering, hydraulic calculations and proportioning accuracy, making system design, retrofits and conversions more predictable
  • UL 162 and FM 5130 fixed-system approvals: Approved with SOLBERG bladder tanks, foam chambers and associated system hardware, including non-aspirated sprinkler heads. It is also designed to meet NFPA requirements for hydrocarbon fuel and critical asset protection, including aircraft hangars, JUHI facilities and fuel storage operations
  • MIL-SPEC-approved and ICAO Level B certification: Validated for aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) performance under military and internationally recognized aviation fire protection standards, meeting FAA and ICAO requirements
  • Material compatibility with aircraft surfaces: Tested in accordance with the Boeing Specification Support Standard (BSS 7432) for evaluation of airplane maintenance materials
  • Advanced fluorine-free formulation: SOLBERG EVOLUTION contains no intentionally added per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). It is developed without silicone or siloxane chemistries, biopolymers or thickening agents and designed to be biodegradable with no persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) profile

Director of Product Management- Global Suppressants, Perimeter Solutions, James Perriss’ statement

James Perriss, Director of Product Management- Global Suppressants at Perimeter Solutions commented: “SOLBERG Evolution builds on the success of SOLBERG 3% MIL-SPEC SFFF, the first fluorine-free concentrate to be included on the Department of Defense’s Qualified Products List (QPL).

“This formulation expands the range of approved applications, including use with standard sprinkler systems, providing another example of how SOLBERG is advancing fire suppression technology while supporting customers with environmentally responsible, high-performance solutions.”
