Oregon extends program for wildfire defensible space funding

December 3, 2024

Incentive program targets wildfire-vulnerable communities

The Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has announced the expansion of its incentive program to support wildfire defensible space projects.

This program is now available to more communities in Oregon, offering eligible homeowners and property owners a $250 payment upon completing a defensible space assessment.

According to the OSFM, assessments are free and can be scheduled online at oregondefensiblespace.org.

State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple highlighted the program’s importance in preparing for future wildfire seasons, stating: “We strongly encourage home and property owners to schedule an assessment.

“Taking this first step can make a difference in protecting your home and neighborhood from wildfire risks.”

Defensible space and its role in wildfire preparedness

Defensible space refers to managing the area around homes and other buildings to prevent embers from starting fires.

The OSFM emphasizes that creating and maintaining defensible space is among the most effective methods for reducing wildfire risks.

The program seeks to mitigate financial barriers, offering monetary incentives to encourage the adoption of recommended measures from assessments.

Targeting the most vulnerable communities

The OSFM selected eligible communities based on their vulnerability to wildfires.

By focusing on these areas, the agency aims to provide resources to those most in need.

After completing a defensible space assessment, qualifying individuals will receive their $250 payment by mail.

Building fire-adapted communities in Oregon

The expanded program aligns with the OSFM’s goal of fostering fire-adapted communities.

As wildfire risks continue to grow, initiatives like this encourage proactive measures to minimize wildfire impacts on lives, property, and the environment.
