The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) is calling for tariff relief on Canadian products used in the fire sprinkler industry, warning that recent measures could affect the supply and affordability of essential fire and life safety components.
“We appreciate the administration’s willingness to listen to an industry whose focus is saving lives and adjusting policies to ensure economic health without compromising public safety,” said NFSA President Shane Ray. “We welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can work together to protect American infrastructure while fostering fair trade. We are hopeful that an adjustment can be made for fire and life safety components.”
NFSA added that major components of fire pumps used in the U.S. are manufactured by Canadian partners. These include fire pump controllers, described by the association as the “brains” of a fire pump, supplied by companies including Eaton and Tornatech, as well as pump manufacturer members Peerless Pumps, SPP Pumps, Inc., and Armstrong Pumps.
NFSA said fire pump controllers are typically among the most expensive parts of a fire pump package. It warned that tariff escalation risks, potentially reaching 50%, could create an unsustainable financial burden for building owners, government-managed critical infrastructure, and facilities that rely on fire pumps where municipal water supplies are unavailable or insufficient.
The association emphasized that fire pump components are not ordinary consumer goods. They are lifesaving, code-required parts of systems used to protect schools, hospitals, commercial high-rises, industrial sites, and other high-risk properties. NFSA said the issue affects both new construction and existing facilities, including properties that support food production and other essential services.
