National Fire Protection Association names Ross Ashley to lead NFPA

Ross Ashley appointed to lead NFPA

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Board of Directors has unanimously selected Ross Ashley to serve as the organization’s next president and chief executive officer.

The appointment follows a vote by the board to install an executive with over 30 years of experience across public safety, emergency management, and corporate leadership.

Ashley most recently held the position of Senior Director, Emergency Management at KPMG.

In that capacity, he managed programs assisting local and state agencies with disaster response, mitigation, and preparedness.

His professional background includes serving as assistant administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

During his time at FEMA, he oversaw more than $10 billion in annual financial assistance for disaster relief and preparedness programs.

David R. Paulison, chair of the NFPA Board, confirmed the appointment as the organization marks 130 years of establishing life safety and electrical standards.

“Ross has the determination and skills to continue the growth of NFPA to further advance its critical mission,” Paulison said.

Leadership transition and strategic focus

Ashley will officially begin his new role on July 1 and will work alongside Jim Pauley through the end of the month.

Pauley has led the association since 2014 and is retiring following 35 years of involvement as a member, standards council chair, and president.

The leadership change occurs as the organization focuses on four strategic pillars involving digital innovation and global diversification.

Ashley brings military experience to the position, having served 20 years in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves.

He was the first member of the Air National Guard to receive a master’s degree in Strategic Intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College.

Incoming president Ashley noted the importance of evolving fire and life safety strategies to address modern hazards.

“I am impressed with the trajectory of NFPA to reach new heights in order to meet the fire and life safety challenges of our times,” Ashley said.

“The quest to better protect people and property from fire and other hazards should never be stagnant.”

“I’m looking forward to building on the success that Jim and the team have built.”

Pauley stated that the organization currently reaches more people in more locations to address persistent threats.

“Ross Ashley is an excellent choice to continue the momentum at NFPA, and I am sure he will find it as fulfilling as I have,” Pauley said.
