The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) are expanding their partnership to combat the growing risk of wildfires.
On October 15, 2024, the two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at solidifying their joint efforts to reduce wildfire destruction in homes and communities.
The agreement was signed by NFPA President and CEO Jim Pauley and IBHS President and CEO Roy Wright.
Pauley noted: “This agreement solidifies both organizations’ commitment to proactively working to mitigate today’s ever-growing wildfire threats.”
According to IBHS, the collaboration will focus on research, education, and community-level policy initiatives to reduce wildfire risks across vulnerable regions.
A key focus of the NFPA and IBHS collaboration is on education for both homeowners and communities.
The organizations plan to share guidance on effective wildfire mitigation techniques.
The IBHS will contribute its research on wildfire behavior, while the NFPA will use its network of community relationships to increase outreach.
Wright said: “Coupling IBHS’s latest wildfire research with NFPA’s deep relationships in communities that face wildfire will help reach more people with actionable guidance.”
Homeowners will be given resources on how to reduce wildfire risks through parcel-level and community-level measures, as both organizations aim to make such information more accessible.
The partnership comes at a time when wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe, especially in parts of the U.S.
This trend is pushing for a stronger emphasis on wildfire preparedness and prevention efforts.
Both organizations acknowledge that the rising incidence of wildfires has resulted in more people seeking out ways to safeguard their homes.
The NFPA and IBHS hope their combined resources will offer meaningful guidance that can help mitigate these risks.
The organizations are particularly focused on helping vulnerable communities, sharing research, and offering practical solutions aimed at reducing wildfire damage.
As part of their ongoing collaboration, the NFPA and IBHS will present updates on their wildfire mitigation efforts at the upcoming NFPA Conference & Expo in June 2025.
The session will provide insights into their progress and future plans for wildfire preparedness.
Attendees can expect to hear about the latest research, new developments in community outreach, and updates on policy initiatives.
For additional updates on this partnership and other related initiatives, the public is encouraged to visit the NFPA press room or the IBHS newsroom.
