Memorial Weekend events confirmed for Emmitsburg campus

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed the United States Fire Administration (USFA) campus will be open for the 2026 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend on May 2–3.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) stated the ceremonies will take place as planned at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

This decision follows support from the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Congressional Fire Services Caucus during a partial government shutdown.

The development allows the fire service community and Fire Hero Families to gather at the site dedicated to those who died in the line of duty.

Victor Stagnaro, Chief Executive Officer of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, described the site as a sacred place for the annual national tribute.

Stagnaro said: “We are grateful that we will be able to gather at the National Memorial to honor these heroes and stand with their families.

“There is no more meaningful place to recognize their sacrifices and ensure their legacies are never forgotten.”

Foundation to honor 204 firefighters during national tribute

The NFFF will recognize 204 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice during the upcoming ceremonies.

Nearly 1,000 family members are expected to attend the events to receive the gratitude of the nation.

The schedule includes a Candlelight Service on Saturday, May 2, and the National Memorial Service on Sunday, May 3.

Both events will be broadcast via livestream for individuals who cannot travel to the Maryland campus.

“Honoring America’s fallen firefighters is a national responsibility,” Stagnaro added.

“We are thankful to everyone who helped make it possible for the fire service community and Fire Hero Families to come together in this sacred place during the partial government shutdown.”

The weekend coincides with the Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters campaign starting April 26.

This national program involves landmarks, firehouses, and homes glowing red in remembrance of the fallen until the conclusion of the memorial services.
