As reported by the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE), the Modernizing Wildfire Safety and Prevention Act, a new bipartisan bill, has been introduced.
Sponsored by Representatives Josh Harder (D-CA), Scott Franklin (R-FL), and Joe Neguse (D-CO), this legislation is based on recommendations from the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission.
This commission, composed of wildfire experts, was established under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 to study the causes and solutions to the wildfire crisis.
NFFE National President Randy Erwin commented on the bill’s significance: “This legislation is a comprehensive and sensible approach to how the federal government should respond to the evolving wildfire crisis.
“Experts from the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission laid out their recommendations, and now is the time to put those strategies into action.”
The Modernizing Wildfire Safety and Prevention Act aims to improve the recruitment and retention of skilled federal wildland firefighters.
This will be achieved by creating new training programs, hiring more personnel, and enhancing benefits and working conditions to retain experienced firefighters in federal service.
The legislation also plans to implement innovative technologies to improve fire response times and track health concerns caused by wildfire smoke.
Erwin emphasized the importance of these measures: “This legislation will greatly impact recruitment and retention of skilled personnel, with critical support mechanisms for the wellbeing of wildland firefighters at the forefront of this crisis.
“It will also equip the workforce with the necessary technologies and resources to safely protect our communities from wildfires.”
NFFE expressed its approval of Congress’s strategic steps to implement the solutions proposed in the Commission’s report.
Erwin highlighted the need for increased compensation for wildland firefighters, which can be addressed with the Wildland Firefighter Paycheck Protection Act.
