Respiratory protection upgrade planned for Southern California fire crews

MSA Safety has reported that it will supply the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) in California with self-contained breathing apparatus as part of a new $10 million contract.

The order involves MSA’s G1 SCBA units, which are expected to be delivered by 2025.

The manufacturer explained that the OCFA made its selection following an evaluation process that emphasized technology, connectivity, and upgradability.

Technology and modularity were key selection factors

According to MSA Safety, the G1 SCBA was chosen based on its integrated digital features and the potential for future upgrades.

The company stated that the device includes 15 U.S. patents and serves as the core of its Connected Firefighter platform.

MSA Safety explained that the G1 SCBA transmits data such as air cylinder pressure, battery life, and alarms to incident commanders via its FireGrid software system.

FireGrid and integrated thermal imaging support incident command

The FireGrid software system, as described by MSA Safety, allows incident commanders to manage and monitor crews during emergencies using real-time data.

The G1 SCBA also includes an integrated thermal imaging camera (iTIC) designed to provide each firefighter with their own thermal imaging capability.

The iTIC is embedded within the SCBA’s control module, which includes a video display and other supporting electronics.

MSA continues growth in Southern California fire service market

The manufacturer said the OCFA contract builds on previous supply agreements with both the Los Angeles County and Los Angeles City Fire Departments.

Joann Serakowski, Vice President of Fire Service – U.S. and Canada at MSA Safety, said: “We are incredibly proud to establish this new partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority.”

Serakowski added: “Most importantly, we’re honored the department has entrusted MSA with the responsibility of protecting the men and women who help keep the residents of Orange County safe each day.”

About the Orange County Fire Authority and delivery timeline

The Orange County Fire Authority is a regional agency that serves 23 cities and unincorporated areas in the county.

MSA Safety noted that the OCFA operates 78 stations and provides services to nearly two million residents.

Delivery of the SCBA units is expected to be finalized during 2025.
