MSA Safety has been awarded a significant contract by the U.S. Air Force, valued at $35 million, to provide advanced respiratory protective equipment for air base fire brigades worldwide.

This contract highlights MSA Safety’s role as a prominent provider of critical safety equipment in the fire service sector.

Comprehensive safety solutions for air base fire brigades

Under the terms of the contract, MSA Safety will supply the U.S. Air Force with their innovative G1 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), along with associated facepieces, chemical warfare component (CWC) masks, and supplied-air respirator (SAR) kits.

This equipment will serve as essential gear for U.S. Air Force fire brigades stationed at air bases globally.

The G1 SCBA model, renowned for its advanced features, will replace older models of MSA air masks currently in use.

Innovative features of the G1 SCBA

The G1 SCBA platform, developed by MSA Safety, incorporates more than 15 patents and offers several cutting-edge features.

Key innovations include the removal of electronic components from the facepiece, a “Central Power” design powered by a single rechargeable battery, and “buddy lights” that penetrate darkness and smoke to provide visible indicators of critical air supply data.

Furthermore, the apparatus boasts improved voice amplification communications.

From a comfort standpoint, the G1’s ergonomic design, adjustable waist belt, and wide shoulder straps allow for more even weight distribution, enhancing comfort during prolonged use.

Production and delivery timeline

Production in support of the U.S. Air Force contract commenced this fall at MSA Safety’s Murrysville, Pennsylvania manufacturing facility.

The company anticipates that deliveries will continue through the end of the year and extend into 2024, ensuring a timely provision of this vital equipment to the Air Force’s fire brigades.
