As reported by the NVFC, MSA Safety, DuPont Personal Protection, and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) have announced the first recipients of the 2024 Globe Gear Giveaway.
The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department in New Jersey and the Keating Rural Fire Protection District in Baker City, Oregon, have been selected to receive new turnout gear and fire helmets.
This annual giveaway aims to provide critical personal protective equipment to volunteer fire departments in need.
Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department, serving a population of 12,000, has been facing challenges due to outdated gear.
More than half of its members are using turnout gear that is over a decade old.
Samantha Kunis, firefighter and NFIRS secretary, stated: “This donation will help us do the job of saving lives and protecting property to the best of our ability while protecting our well-being.”
The Keating Rural Fire Protection District, responsible for a vast 90,000-acre area, is comprised entirely of volunteers.
Their existing gear, most of which is over 20 years old, has impacted their ability to ensure firefighter safety.
Corinna Jacobs, the department’s training officer, noted: “The awarded gear will provide increased safety to firefighters and all constituents, increased professionalism due to equipment and training, and improved mutual aid capabilities.”
The department serves a small population of 155 but covers rugged mountains, farmland, outdoor recreational areas, and a popular scenic byway.
Revenue is limited as the district operates on a subscription-based model, making the need for new gear essential.
Throughout 2024, additional awards will be made monthly.
Thirteen departments will each receive four sets of Globe turnout gear and four MSA fire helmets.
The first 500 applicants also received a one-year NVFC membership courtesy of MSA.
These awards aim to enhance the safety and operational capabilities of volunteer fire departments across the country.
The Globe Gear Giveaway, now in its 13th year, continues to support volunteer fire departments by providing much-needed personal protective equipment.
The initiative underscores the ongoing challenges faced by these departments and the importance of ensuring firefighter safety and preparedness.
The donation to Hasbrouck Heights and Keating Rural Fire Protection Districts highlights the vital role of community support and corporate partnerships in enhancing the capabilities of volunteer firefighters.
