Minas Gerais establishes new firefighting laboratory to improve safety training

On October 7, 2024, the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG) inaugurated a Firefighting and Expertise Laboratory at the Professional Training Center (CTP) in Contagem.

This initiative was made possible through a collaboration between CBMMG and the construction company DVG Sical.

The new facility is intended to advance the academic and practical training of firefighting and investigation efforts within urban settings.

The laboratory will facilitate advanced training for firefighters by allowing for the simulation of various fire scenarios.

This will enable crews to enhance their technical skills.

Additionally, the facility is designed to support urban fire investigations in Minas Gerais.

It provides a controlled environment where experts and inspectors can recreate real fire conditions and apply the necessary methodologies for the improvement of fire safety legislation.

Design features of the laboratory

The project was developed with input from CTP military personnel and the Operational Thematic Groups of the CBMMG.

It mimics a residential layout to simulate realistic urban fire scenarios.

The facility has been modified to include metal doors and windows and covers an area of approximately 58 square meters.

Its self-supporting masonry structure includes rooms designed to resemble those in typical homes.

This laboratory will not only serve training purposes but also facilitate scientific research in collaboration with higher education institutions.

The establishment of this facility aims to enhance the overall service provided by the CBMMG to the community in Minas Gerais.

Simulations conducted during inauguration

During the inauguration ceremony, several simulations were executed to assess the performance of various construction materials and to analyze fire dynamics.

These practical demonstrations served to test the laboratory’s capabilities and validate its design for effective training and evaluation.

The event was attended by Colonel Erlon Dias do Nascimento Botelho, the general commander of CBMMG, and Colonel Daniela Lopes Rocha da Costa, the deputy commander and chief of staff.

Colonel Botelho expressed appreciation for the new facility and highlighted its significance for the future of firefighting in the region.

He noted: “We are once again consolidating research and science so that our activities are better known and, mainly, with the appropriate technical development.

“I am certain that the laboratory will become a landmark for Minas Gerais and for our profession as military firefighters.”

Benefits for firefighting and public safety

The new Firefighting and Expertise Laboratory is expected to play a crucial role in improving the capabilities of the CBMMG.

By providing a space for practical training and research, it will enhance the overall effectiveness of fire safety measures in urban environments.

This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department to promote safety and professionalism within the fire service.
