November 28, 2024

Simulation prepares teams for landslides during Rio’s rainy season

According to the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the 15th Military Fire Brigade Group (GBM) in Petrópolis conducted an operational landslide simulation on November 26.

The exercise, focused on responding to landslides caused by heavy rains, mobilized disaster response teams to prepare for the summer season’s heightened risks in the mountainous regions.

Participants included personnel from the 15th GBM and detachments in Três Rios, Itaipava, and Areal.

The Telecommunications Material Supply and Maintenance Center (CSM/MTel) supported communication between rescue teams and the Operational Command and Control Center.

The training also included a representative from the Petrópolis technical-scientific police, tasked with victim identification, ensuring a realistic and coordinated disaster response.

Colonel Tarciso Salles, Commander-in-Chief of CBMERJ, noted: “Carrying out simulations like this one is essential to keep our troops ready to respond efficiently and quickly to natural disasters that affect our state, especially during periods of heavy rain.”

Strengthening operational readiness through integration

The exercise aimed to enhance the technical, logistical, and strategic readiness of the Military Fire Department.

Collaboration among various teams and sectors reinforced the department’s ability to provide coordinated and efficient disaster response.

The participation of multiple units highlighted the importance of communication and integration in managing disaster scenarios effectively.

The simulation allowed teams to refine strategies and optimize the use of resources.

This effort contributes to protecting communities from the impacts of natural disasters, especially during periods of extreme weather.

Activities like these strengthen the department’s operational readiness and ensure quick response times during critical incidents.

Addressing vulnerability in the Mountain Region

The Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro is particularly vulnerable to landslides during heavy rains.

This training underscored the importance of maintaining constant preparation to mitigate the effects of such events.

By focusing on high-risk areas, the exercise aimed to reduce potential losses of life and property.

CBMERJ emphasized its ongoing commitment to safeguarding communities in vulnerable areas.

The simulation is part of broader efforts to enhance disaster prevention and readiness, aligning with the department’s mission to protect lives and property under challenging circumstances.

Commitment to disaster prevention and response

The Military Fire Department continues to prioritize preparation for natural disasters in Rio de Janeiro.

Exercises like the landslide simulation highlight the department’s proactive approach to disaster management.

Such training ensures that personnel are equipped to handle emergencies efficiently and effectively, especially during the rainy season.

Colonel Salles added: “In addition to strengthening integration between teams, these activities allow us to perfect strategies and resources, ensuring the safety of the population and the protection of public and private assets.”
