Private equity interest in fire safety surges as M&A activity nearly quadruples, Grata finds

Private equity interest in the fire safety market is accelerating as buyers target a large and fragmented field of service providers, according to new research from Grata, the private markets M&A intelligence platform from Datasite.

The company’s ‘The PE Playbook: Fire Safety’ report found that M&A activity in the sector has nearly quadrupled since 2017, with more than 118,000 privately owned companies identified as potential acquisition targets.

Grata said the investor focus reflects rising demand for fire prevention, inspection, testing, mitigation, and compliance services as wildfire risk, regulatory enforcement, data center development, and aging business ownership reshape the market.

The analysis examined privately held companies across core fire safety services, including alarm installation, inspection and testing, fire suppression, emergency lighting, and sprinkler maintenance. Grata said these services are attractive to both strategic and financial buyers because they are often recurring, compliance-driven, and essential for building owners and operators.

“The data points to a compelling consolidation opportunity in fire safety,” said Andrew Bocskocsky, executive vice president, private markets intelligence at Datasite. “A large, fragmented base of specialized providers, recurring demand, and rising investor activity all point to strong momentum in the sector.”

Key findings from the M&A report

  • Privately owned companies represent 73% of the fire safety industry, creating a broad pool of potential consolidation targets.
  • Fire alarm installation is the largest segment by company count, accounting for 36.5% of the industry.
  • Sprinkler maintenance is the smallest segment by company count but shows the strongest revenue and growth profile.
  • The United States leads the global market with about 70,000 companies, followed by Germany with 35,900 and the United Kingdom with 29,700.
  • Regulation is supporting recurring demand for inspection and compliance work, including measures such as Florida’s Milestone Inspection law, New York City’s Local Law 26, California’s Wildland-Urban Interface Code, post-Grenfell enforcement in the United Kingdom, European CEN and EN standards, and ISO and NFPA frameworks referenced in global markets.
