May 23, 2024

Globe Gear Giveaway: Application deadline approaching

The deadline to apply for four sets of turnout gear and four helmets through MSA and DuPont’s Globe Gear Giveaway is June 1, 2024.

A total of 52 sets of gear and helmets will be awarded to 13 volunteer fire departments in 2024.

To qualify, departments must be over 50% volunteer, serve a population of 25,000 or less, be legally organized in the U.S. or Canada, and the person applying or department chief must be a member of the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC).

The program, which began in 2012, is a collaboration between MSA Safety, DuPont Personal Protection, and the NVFC.

It aims to provide essential gear to volunteer fire departments in need.

This year, MSA Safety will donate a total of 52 sets of turnout gear and 52 helmets to 13 all-volunteer or mostly-volunteer fire departments across the U.S. and Canada.

Eligibility criteria

To apply, departments must meet several criteria.

They must be over 50% volunteer and serve a population of 25,000 or less.

Departments must also be legally organized under state or province law in the U.S. or Canada, including Indian/tribal entities not organized under state/province law.

The individual applying or the department chief must be a member of the NVFC, although the initial offer of complimentary NVFC memberships for the first 500 applicants has been exhausted.

Applicants must demonstrate a need for the gear.

Only one application per department is allowed, and any subsequent applications will be disqualified.

Recipients must use the donated gear for their department’s benefit and agree to allow their department name, application essay details, and photos to be used in media by MSA, DuPont, and the NVFC to promote the donation program.

Departments that won in the past two years are not eligible to apply.

Selection process

An expert panel selected by the NVFC will review the applications after the submission period ends.

Thirteen winning departments will each receive four sets of turnouts and four helmets.

Winners will be contacted directly before the public announcement.

Two to three winners will be announced each month between July and December.

The Globe Gear Giveaway was established to support volunteer firefighters who risk their lives to protect their communities.

Many volunteer fire departments struggle to provide adequate gear for their personnel, often using worn-out or non-compliant equipment.

This program helps address that need.

Program background

The Globe Gear Giveaway began in 2012 when Globe partnered with DuPont and the NVFC to celebrate Globe’s 125th anniversary by donating turnout gear to volunteer departments in need.

Due to the success of the initial program, it became an annual event.

In 2019, MSA began including helmets in the giveaway, and to date, over $1 million worth of gear has been donated, with 715 sets of turnout gear and 260 helmets awarded to 160 departments.
