The Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) has announced it welcomed “Crew 4” on Monday 19 May – 26 new recruits who will become LAFD’s first full-time paid Wildland Hand Crew Technicians.
Crew 4’s training academy will include education on wildland fire behavior, weather, chainsaw operations and line cutting; the recruits will also engage in team building and complete numerous certifications over the next five weeks.
Supervised by two foremen and a superintendent, and operating within LAFD’s Disaster Response Section, Crew 4 will respond to wildfires within and around the city of Los Angeles.
When not fighting wildfires, the LAFD has shared how they will be heavily involved in vegetation clearance and management, as well as training to augment LAFD’s response to all-hazard incidents such as debris flows and technical rescues.
In a statement, the LAFD shared: “We welcome the men and women of Crew 4 and wish them every success as they begin their fire service careers!”
