Januária firefighters prepare for the Carnival period

The 8th Platoon of the Januária Fire Department in Brazil has intensified the training of service members in order to prepare teams for the Carnival period.

During the activities, training was carried out in fire and panic safety, first aid and water rescue, with an emphasis on prevention and basic life support in cases of drowning.

The Carnival period registers an increase in the number of people seeking leisure in rivers, lagoons and waterfalls, increasing the risk of drowning and other occurrences.

The chain of survival

In order to prepare the military to act in pre-hospital care for drowning victims, the chain of survival of for the drowned person was worked on.

The links in this chain were presented and discussed, with emphasis on the fifth link, which deals with basic life support. In this stage, the concepts and classification of the different degrees of drowning were addressed, as well as the appropriate conduct for each case.

In the practical phase of the training, the team carried out exercises to consolidate the knowledge acquired, focusing on the care of drowning victims.

The activities included swimming practices and rescue techniques, ensuring that firefighters are prepared to act efficiently in different situations.

Service members also reviewed and reinforced approach techniques for drowning victims, both responsive and non-responsive.

These techniques vary according to the degree of drowning, the materials available and the number of firefighters involved in the occurrence.
