William Foster’s impact on fire safety and training

William “Bill” Foster, a co-founder of Spartan Fire Chassis, passed away on January 1, 2025, surrounded by family.

Foster, who helped establish Spartan Motors in 1975, played a key role in shaping the U.S. fire industry.

According to REV Group, his leadership set high standards in training, service, and equipment reliability.

He was instrumental in developing specialized fire apparatus that focused on both safety and efficiency.

Founding of Spartan Motors and career milestones

Foster and three engineers founded Spartan Motors, later Spartan Fire Chassis, in 1975.

Their first chassis was built for Covington, Ohio, Fire Department.

From 1976, Foster served as Vice President and joined the company’s Board in 1978.

His innovations contributed to safer, more efficient fire apparatus.

Establishment of the Fire Truck Training Conference

In 1994, Foster founded the Fire Truck Training Conference (FTTC).

The event aimed to improve the skills of emergency vehicle technicians (EVTs).

For the past decade, the ‘Bill Foster Award’ has been presented annually to an exemplary EVT.

Awards and recognitions

Foster received numerous honors for his work.

These included the Jim A. Bland Memorial Award and a commemorative fire hydrant in 2008.

In 2008, the Fire Department Safety Officers Association awarded him for 30 years of EVT training contributions.
