IAFF launch EV Fire/ Rescue Response Operations Guide

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has launched a new Electric Vehicle Fire/ Rescue Response Operations Guide.

The Guide is now available to help firefighters safely and effectively manage the growing number of EV-related incidents across North America.

Released by the US Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the guide offers critical, field-ready information on the unique hazards electric vehicles pose, including high-voltage batteries, thermal runaway and electric propulsion systems.

General President, IAFF, Edward Kelly’s statement

General President Edward Kelly’s shared in a statement: “As technology continues to evolve, the IAFF remains focused on ensuring members have the latest training and guidance needed to protect their communities and stay safe on the job.”

Additional resources

This Guide is part of the IAFF’s ongoing commitment to educating members and addressing the rising threat of battery-related fires.

The guide intends to complement other IAFF resources, including the Energy Storage Systems Emergency Response Operations guide and a June 2025 safety advisory warning members not to use fire blankets on EV fires due to safety risks and limited effectiveness.

The IAFF has also launched a new 8-hour, in-person course on responding to renewable energy emergencies involving solar panels, battery systems and other emerging technologies.
