Hispasat launches comprehensive fire management system in Chile

August 8, 2024

Hispasat and Pyro Fire Extinction’s new project

Hispasat, in collaboration with Pyro Fire Extinction, has launched a pilot project for fire protection management in Lake Peñuelas, Chile.

The project, which includes the deployment of sensors, a panoramic visible and infrared spectrum camera, and a satellite communications system, aims to improve fire detection and response.

According to Hispasat, the pilot project arose from an agreement between Axess Networks, a subsidiary of Hispasat, and CONAF, the Chilean National Forestry Corporation.

The system covers a perimeter of 35 kilometers and an area of 6,189 hectares.

The sensors collect various environmental data and transmit it to a central point, which then sends it to the cloud in real time.

Early detection and response benefits

The advanced sensors deployed in this project can detect fires immediately without false alarms, significantly reducing response time and associated risks.

The collected information helps anticipate fire behavior, the flammability of forest fuels, and provides local weather forecasts.

Christian Little, executive director of CONAF, emphasized the importance of the new system: “We are fully committed to improving fire alert and protection systems.

“The implementation of this solution, which exponentially improves the integration of technology in this area and immediately detects the appearance of new fires, will help us when it comes to offering the best response to the occurrence of these incidents.”

Technological advancements and implications

Luis Vargas, General Manager of Hispasat in Chile, highlighted the significance of the technological solution: “The technological solution deployed in the Lago Peñuelas National Reserve represents a great leap forward in the prevention and early detection of fires.

“Acting as quickly as possible in this type of scenario is essential to optimize extinction tasks and reduce the risk to the population and emergency teams.

“We hope that this initiative will be a success and can be extended to other reserves in the country.”

Broader applications and previous deployments

The comprehensive fire protection management solution from Hispasat and Pyro has already been successfully deployed in other forest areas in Spain and Portugal.

This system’s capability to transmit information using satellite communications and LoRa networks enables deployment even in remote areas without terrestrial infrastructure.

Hispasat has been active in Chile since 2012 through its subsidiary Axess Networks, based in Santiago.

The company operates 13 satellites, providing various connectivity solutions and secure communications, positioning it as a key player in the aerospace sector.
