HCBCDMX and AGATAN sign agreement on the proper handling of companion animals

The Heroic Fire Department of Mexico City (HCBCDMX) and the Mexico City Animal Care Agency (AGATAN) have signed a collaboration agreement to combine their expertise and efforts within their respective areas of responsibility to carry out projects, programs and training of mutual interest.

The First Superintendent and General Director of the Heroic Fire Department of Mexico City, Juan Manuel Pérez Cova, stated that this agreement strengthens the work of the firefighters, with greater training and better tools to continue rescuing companion animals, as one of the services they perform daily.

He said: “This agreement will optimize the pet rescue efforts we carry out daily. We have significant figures in this area, as from January to March of this year, we rescued 211 cats who were returned to their families. Congratulations on this agreement.”

Features of the agreement

The agreement establishes that the HCBCDMX will receive periodic training from AGATAN on the safe handling and rescue of animals in emergency situations; in addition, rescued animals will receive veterinary care.

It also establishes that the Agency’s first responders will be trained in basic fire prevention and emergency response operations; they will receive instruction on firefighting system management, evacuation actions, communication, and first aid.

General Director, AGATAN, Ana Villagrán Villasana’s statement

For her part, Ana Villagrán Villasana, General Director of the Animal Care Agency, explained that the Mexico City Veterinary Hospital will open its doors to every stray dog ​​or cat rescued by the HCBCDMX.

She said: “Our priority is to save their lives, and through the protocol for medical care for rescued abandoned animals, we will follow a series of coordinated steps to ensure the animal’s well-being: Rescue and transfer, Reception and initial evaluation, Medical care and treatment, Registration and documentation, Coordination for safekeeping and dissemination of adoption information.”

Finally, both expressed their gratitude for their combined efforts and for being authorities committed to animal welfare.
