The FDNY held a graduation ceremony for the Captain Vernon A. Richard High School for Fire and Life Safety Class of 2024 on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island.
As reported by FDNY, this event marked the graduation of the 17th class from the high school, which has been integral in preparing students for careers in emergency services.
Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh addressed the graduates, highlighting their perseverance through challenging times: “Throughout unprecedented times marked by disruptions caused by the pandemic, you have already learned about the unpredictability in life.
“Despite these challenges, you persevered, and your graduation today is a testament to your adaptability and resilience, two traits that are essential in the FDNY.”
Since its inception, the Captain Vernon A. Richard High School for Fire and Life Safety has seen significant contributions to the FDNY workforce.
To date, 101 graduates have been hired by the Department, currently serving as EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters.
Commissioner Kavanagh emphasized the importance of community engagement in her speech: “As you consider what shape your future will take, I encourage you to carry the spirit of community forward with you.
It’s not just about being part of one, but actively participating and contributing to make it better.”
The pandemic significantly impacted the students’ high school experience, altering their daily routines and interactions.
Commissioner Kavanagh acknowledged these challenges in her address: “In the midst of your first year, the usual routines—spending time with friends and family, going out, and simply being a regular teenager—came to a halt. Despite these challenges, you persevered.”
This acknowledgment underlines the resilience and adaptability that the students have demonstrated, qualities that are crucial in the field of emergency services.
The graduates of the Class of 2024 are now poised to take their next steps into the world, equipped with unique experiences and skills acquired during their time at the FDNY High School.
With the continued support of the FDNY, these young professionals are expected to contribute significantly to public safety and emergency response efforts.
