Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief from Pennsylvania, was identified as the man killed at a rally for former President Donald Trump.
As reported by various sources, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced the news on Sunday.
Comperatore, who was known for his dedication to his family, died while shielding them during the incident.
Governor Shapiro honored Comperatore’s bravery, stating: “Corey died a hero. Corey dove on his family to protect them last night.”
He further called for flags to be flown at half-mast in Comperatore’s memory.
Comperatore’s family and friends have been mourning his loss.
His sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, described him as a hero in a Facebook post.
“The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most.
He was a hero that shielded his daughters,” Schafer wrote.
His daughter Allyson also expressed her grief, describing her father as “a real-life superhero” who protected his family during the shooting.
Jason Bubb, a longtime family friend, shared his memories of Comperatore: “Anything we needed, he was there at the drop of a hat.
He’s been there for my kids since they were born.” Bubb emphasized that Comperatore’s final act of protecting his family was a true reflection of his character.
In response to the shooting at the rally, President Joe Biden is scheduled to address the nation on Sunday afternoon after receiving a briefing in the Situation Room.
The President’s address is expected to cover the incident and the broader implications of such violence.
Following Comperatore’s death, his community has rallied to support his family.
Bubb, who owns a gym where Comperatore and his daughter were members, initiated a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $1,000,000.
“I opened this gym to support and help those in my community,” Bubb said. “I feel like my name was called on.”
The local community in Butler County has been deeply affected by Comperatore’s death, with many expressing their shock and grief.
Bubb described the sentiment: “News of the death has been shattering to those who knew him.”
